Right-wing fundamentalist religious and political organizations, such as The Christian Coalition, The Family Forum, and others represented by Pat Robertson, Donald Wildmon, Rep. Robert Dornan, Lou Sheldon, James Dobson, et al, are telling lies in their propaganda against the gay community. How are we to stop them? They claim religious exemption. This may apply to their religious propaganda, but what about the other fundy political organizations? They cannot claim that exemption. The burden of proof should be on them. We should challenge them to prove their assertions in court. I am confident they cannot offer concrete proof. Therefore we should initiate a class action suit against them for defamation of character, slander and spreading malicious lies against a people who have not hurt them. We should ask for punitive and civil damages in the billions, effectively putting their operations out of business if we should win. And a successful suit should require them to cease and desist their propaganda against us and give a public apology. Do we have the balls to do it? How many of us are itching for a fight?
These fundy organizations have no moral qualms against using any unscrupulous means against gays and anyone else they consider their enemies. We have been too nice or timid in our defence and AIDS has sapped much of our energies. Now, before it is too late, it is time to go on the offensive and use some of their tactics against them. They have many skeletons in their closets that we can expose. We should bring them out.
The fundies accuse us of having an agenda for the nation. Let's give the right wing one worthy of a fight. Are there any gay legal professionals who would like to work on this agenda for the good of our community?
Many more people than gays should have a stake in this action. We need ways to make them aware of the threat right-wing fundamentalism poses for many minority groups, indivividual rights and freedom of speech for everyone. We have a moral duty to humanity to expose and oppose lies in any form against anyone for any reason, not just to defend our community, but to defend the truth no matter how uncomfortable that truth is or who is hurt by it. It's time to put our souls on the line.
