The right-wing's agenda is to turn America into a theological dictatorship wherein everyone must profess to believe in Christianity. They want a rich and powerful priviledged class to rule and exploit the citizenry. Big business could control a captive consumer market. This will create a large underpriviledged class that will drag society down. Free inquiry will be stifled. The economy will suffer. A beligerent government would be likely to plunge the nation and the world into a war that might this time truly be the final one. The apocalypse may be a self-fulfilling prophecy.
The right wing and religious right do not support individual freedom and plurality. They are afraid of it. They want authoritarian control over society and a rigid social structure of distinct and limited roles. They want to be told or tell others what to do, what to believe, to desire security and conformity rather than freedom and diversity. We are in danger of repeating the errors of Nazi Germany. Much suffering could ensue, millions of lives could ultimately be lost before this madness burns itself out, as it always must.
The right wants control over childrens' minds to indoctrinate them into their belief system. They do not want an open systyem of schooling where all viewpoints are presented, whether with judgements or not. Free thinkers are a danger to their ideology. But what of children who are denied their right to learn all available knowledge? Should parents have a right to restrict knowledge to their children? Children are human beings, too, and should have all human rights.
Authoritarians are afraid of themselves, afraid of individual freedom and its responsibilities. This deficiency probably has many causes. The abuse of a restricted, authoritarian upbringing is sufficient. Anyone who lives and believes differently from them is a threat to their existence. So they must project their fears outward to blame someone else, thus scapegoating a minority group.
Many fundamentalists are so obcessed with ridding the country of gays, abortionists, and pornography that they do not face far more important social problems, such as overpopulation and environmental pollution. Why are they afraid of these things? Have any gays hurt them? Is abortion murder? Does pornography hurt children? These assertions have no proof. And if they should succeeed in their progroms who will be next? This kind of scapegoating has no end. Is this a sickenss of the spirit?
Many members of the religious right I believe to be false Christians. They spew lies, hatred and fear to gain their agendas. Some of their leaders are using their vast hordes of followers to press an individual agenda solely for political power. Some of them are evil and know it, or insane, others are being mislead, their fears exploited. Even the fundamentalist doctrines predict the existence of many false christians before the apocalypse. Evil must masquerade as good. They appear to be living a self-fulfilled prophecy.
Christianity is a problematical religion in that it considers all other religions false. It demonizes others as the enemy. This is not a totally unique position among religions, but it is rare. Therefore too many christians are taught intolerance in contradiction to Christ's teachings.
Christians can't even agree among themselves what doctrines to follow. There are many denominations and sects, each having their own interpretation. How can a religion be said to have the truth when its believers disagree? We must remind ourselves that all religions are based on unfounded beliefs and cannot be proven, should not be legislated. Belief itself is blind and can lead us into blind alleys. Societies must base their laws on logic and facts in a rational discourse, but still these can be guided by ideals, albeit beliefs. Simply, beliefs should be held lightly so that they can change when presented with new data. However, we should support the right of belief, even in falsehoods, but no one has the right to force those beliefs on another. In its attempt to legislate its beliefs the religious right is committing gross immoralities.
The fundamentalist Christians know that they will lose the battle over gay rights unless they can take over the nation and eliminate all constitutional rights. If they take over, I'll laugh as they slaughter each other over which denomination has the true word of God.
