An Illusion of Democracy
Big business wants to control our lives for profit. Even government social policy considers citizens as consumers, not free, self-determining individuals. We are sold lifestyles - ways of acceptable behavior. Groups are coopted and distinctive individualism is denied.
Lobbying permits unequal representation.
Attempts at censorship and vaguely defined "indecency standards" on public communications networks abridging freedom of speech.
Most people want some kind of titillation or entertainment and material goods rather than discussion of real issues.
Many people don't understand freedom and what it takes to preserve it.
Religion and belief - emotionalism - rather than reason and logic, facts and research.
Religious influence of government. Imposing one morality for all.
Campaign finances - PACs, private donations unequal. Government should finance campaigns.
Fear of one world government - national sovereignty threatened. Which is more important: the nation or freedom?
Conservatism and liberalism given bad names by bigots. Few people understand what these terms mean.
Fear and bigotry determining politics. This is not recognized as an acutely serious social problem.
Education - schools not teaching the philosophical underpinnings of freedom and human rights and a full cultural background.
That some are entitled to largess - welfare for the rich: tax breaks.
That a wealthy society cannot care for the unfortunate.
Health care is business. That we cannot consider minimal health care a right is a hardship on society and threatens its well-being. For its own good society must offer a safety net.
We are losing the appreciation of diversity.
We are losing the ability to compromise.
Emotional response to crime, not what will really work. Hiding away the criminal or insane.
Taxation not fair.
Racism, sexism, erotophobia.
Supporting authoritarian regimes that favor our business. Not sufficiently fostering democracy in other nations.
Entitlements and subsidies - an unfair distribution of wealth that creates privilege. That government can subsidize private individuals or businesses.
That privacy is not a right. The ownership of oneself should be foremost.
That children are not accorded full rights of citizenship and thus are too greatly influenced by parents.
